Carbon Neutrality

Carbon neutrality is reached when the same amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere is also removed by various means, leaving a zero balance. This is also known as a zero-carbon footprint. Carbon neutrality is imperative to prevent climate change's worst impacts and preserve a livable planet.

There is a global effort to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. The United Nations (UN), European Union and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) agree and are working towards this global goal. There are many components involved in reaching this goal.

Toyota Beyond Zero Vision

Beyond Zero is Toyota and Lexus' vision to reach beyond carbon neutrality with vehicles, services, and operations by finding new ways to positively impact the planet and society. Under this umbrella, Toyota and Lexus currently produce more zero and low-emission vehicles combined than any other manufacturer. Vehicle types include hybrid EV, plug-in hybrid EV, Battery EV and fuel cell EV.

These vehicles work toward the mission by maximizing limited battery resources, reducing carbon emissions. The Hybrid EV accomplishes this by recycling the kinetic energy captured from the vehicle's braking motion to recharge its battery. So, while running on a combination of gas and battery, it does not need to be plugged in for recharging. Fuel cell electric vehicles use oxygen from air combined with stored hydrogen to generate the vehicle's own electric charge to power the car.

Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050

Toyota and Lexus' pledge extends beyond manufacturing vehicles to make the world a better place. Ongoing updates and modifications to the process support water conservation and decreasing plastic waste. Additional programs expand efforts by protecting critical species.

Additionally, Toyota/Lexus Environmental Challenge 2050 has all global team members working to put Toyota and Lexus' global vision of Respect for the Planet into action. This challenge unites everyone in the Toyota and Lexus organizations with the common purpose to "be more than just good stewards of the environment and to create positive change beyond our facility boundaries."
